a
KLEINFELDER
previous groundwater monitoring events conducted at the site.. The groundwater levels noted in
the three wells monitored-have not displayed large fluctuations that most likely would not have
been displayed throughout the course of natural seasonal changes. With the groundwater data
supplied in this report, it is Kleinfelder's opinion this data will be sufficient to establish a
baseline data base.
Based upon the groundwater levels noted in the wells monitored for groundwater depth and the
depth to groundwater noted from test borin s in the quarry,u
P g Pp, it does not ear that there is a
shallow groundwater component (above the naturally occurring groundwater depths) supplied by
. Possible leakage from
the California Aqueduct. It does not appear that substantial leakage (if
any) from the.Califomia Aqueduct in the region of the DSS Vernalis Quarry is occurring at this
! time. Therese there does not appear to be the need for the installation of a groundwater
p
monitoring well between the quarry and the California Aque uct. Similar results were obtained
b the installation of 'oundwater
y gr monitoring wells near the sites eastern boundary and the Delta
Mendota Canal. The results of groundwater monitoring events for these wells showed dry
conditions with no leakage or seepage noted from the canal to the well screens. Kleinfelder does
not recommend installing a monitoring well between the Quarry and the California Aqueduct at
this time.
Special consideration should be given to the sampling procedures for collection
due to the lack of
specialized sampling ports on or near the well heads. We recommend that the area from where
the sample is collected be cleaned prior to collection to diminish the possible cross-
contamination from an outside source. Due to the nature of the wells being used for sam ling
and the goe eral age of the wells it may_not be appropriate to discusssJrofittin telleads
with sampling apparatus. It is our opinion if strict sampling protocols .are followed and
consistent methods of collection are maintained, sufficient quality of the samples collected can
{
be achieved.
{ Kleinfelder recommends that the groundwater monitoring program, continue in accordance with
j the RWQCB M&RP No. 99-034. The next annual sampling event is to be completed in
December 2003. A copy of this report should be forwarded to the RWQCB and Mr. Ray Borges
of the EHD.
LIMITATIONS
4
t
Kleinfelder has prepared this report in accordance with the generally accepted standards of care
which exist in northern California at the time of writing. It should be recognized that definition
and evaluation of geologic and chemical subsurface conditions are difficult. Judgments leading
to conclusions and recommendations are generally made with an incomplete knowledge of the
subsurface and/or historic conditions applicable to the site. The conclusions of this assessment
are based on field observations and analytical results obtained from soil samples collected from
the site. More extensive studies may further reduce the uncertainties associated with this
assessment. Kleinfelder should be notified for additional consultation if the client wishes to
reduce the uncertainties beyond the level associated with this report. No warranty, expressed or
implied, is made.
2913 LEO /ST03R781 Page 4 of 5
Copyright 2003 Kleinfelder,Inc.
g June 2 2003
