Soil Profile and Geologic Information
The Site is depicted on the Preliminary Geologic map of Cenozoic Deposits of the
Bellota Quadrangle, California (Marchand and Atwater, 1979). The Site is depicted
within the Laguna Formation map unit, with a small area on its eastern side falling within
the North Merced Gravel map unit (Plate 7). The Laguna Formation is described as
"arkosic gravel, sand, and silt with some interbedded volcanic detritus derived from the
Mehrten Formation." The North Merced Gravel map unit is described as "thin, locally-
derived pediment gravel cappings over Tertiary deposits."
The surface and near surface soils located at the Site are reported by the USDA Web
Soil Survey to be composed of Redding gravelly loam and Redding loam (Plate 8)
(USDA, 2009). The table below presents some selected properties of these soils:
Table 1. The borings were four inches in diameter, 3.10 and 3.20 feet deep, and
were excavated by hand auger (Table 2). The boring locations are indicated on Plate 2. j
The soil in the borings was similar though less clayey than that described by the Soil
Survey. For boring P1 the soil was cemented reddish brown silty, sandy gravel for the
full depth of the hole. For boring P2, the same soil was present to 2 feet depth, after
LOGE 1104 Page 5
