January 7,2003
Job Number:LG02-026
Page 5
The percolation test casing set in each boring was an open ended 2-inch PVC pipe with holes
drilled on the bottom. Two inches of "pea gravel"was placed in the bottom of the percolation
test holes, the casing was installed, and several feet of"pea gravel"was backfilled in the annular
space. The presaturation was performed on December 3, 2002.
A 4-hour percolation test was conducted on December 4, 2002 in accordance with the
requirements of San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division. The last '/z hour of the test
was observed by a representative of that office. The result of the shallow (3-foot deep)
percolation test indicated a percolation rate of 14.7 minutes per inch. The result of the deep
percolation test achieved a satisfactory percolation rate of less than 3.8 minutes per inch.
5.0 SUITABILITY OF EXISTING SEPTIC SYSTEM
As described previously, the existing septic system is composed of two tanks and one disposal
area connected by tight lines. According to a septic system permit dated 11/18/92,the sewage
disposal area is two (2) filter beds, 6.5 feet by 80 feet each. The filter bed area was designed for
10 to 15 employees.
It is estimated that for the proposed expansion, a maximum of 37 employees and 5 customers
will be on site during a typical 5 day work week. The caretaker residence is a 2 bedroom mobile
home occupied by 1 person. Fifteen(15) gallons per day per person was assigned for the 37
employees for an industrial building category(no cafeteria) according to the San Joaquin County
Sewage Standards. An estimate of 5 gallons per day per person was made for customers.
According to the text book titled Small and Decentralized Wastewater Management Systems by
Crites and Tchobanoglous 6, 70 gallons per day per person was assigned to the mobile home
occupant. Table 2 presents an estimate of average daily flow for sewage at the proposed facility.
6 Crites,R.and Tchobanoglous G., 1998,Small and Decentralized Wastewater Management Systems:
McGraw-Hill Publishing Company,Boston.
pERSO
P 1
D
Z
O ti
,SS pC♦
P
