C DEEP WELL INJECTION AND FRESH 3 1989
WATER PROTECTION Pp0 MESEvGEs'M
P.S.E. San Joaquin Cogeneration Waste Disp( oo aASI
Beginning in the 1950 's deep well disposal of liquid wastes at
great depths has proven to be an environmentally and technically
sound waste disposal method. Safe underground disposal however,
depends on the availability of appropriate underground formations
or sediment deposits that have the natural ability to confine the
waste so that it remains immobile. PSE's proposed underground
waste water injection project located 4 miles west of the City of
Manteca (Exhibit No. 1) was reviewed by the consulting firm of
Wilson Zublin, Inc. Included in this report is a summation of
our findings, along with diagrams designed to demonstrate the
favorable geological conditions beneath the P.S.E. property for
the storage of liquid waste, and more importantly, how it relates
Cl to the protection of the groundwater from contamination by these
fluids. Subsurface geology presented in Exhibit No. 2
illustrates favorable geological conditions for injection. The
red line on Exhibit No. 1 shows location of the wells studied and
proximity to the proposed site.
Exhibit No. 2 shows a vertical profile -view of the subsurface as
it would appear in a general east-west direction, 1/2 mile south
of the P.S.E. property. Below the surface of the ground the
earth consists of numerous layers of stratified rock ranging in _
thickness of 10 's to 1000 's of feet thick. Only those rock
layers important to this project were depicted to greatly
simplify this diagram. This section was drawn from information
gathered from deep wells drilled in the vicinity of the property
and the names of these wells are shown along the top of the
profile.
Quite simply, the waste water is planned to be injected and
Cstored in - two sandstone layers at a depth of approximately 4, 500
WILSON ZUBLIN INC.
