5
\/ ./
hammer. The driven liner and SPT samplers also were used in deeper sand layers.
Most clay layers were sampled with a 3.0-in.-O.D. , thin-walled Shelby tube. The
Shelby tubes were pushed by the drill rig's hydraulic ram. Some samples of clay
soils also were recovered with the driven, liner sampler.
Each sample was removed or extruded from the sampler in the field, examined,
and visually classified by our field geologist. Torvane and pocket penetrometer
strength tests were conducted in the field on samples of clayey soils. Represen-
tative portions of each sample were sealed and packaged for transport to our
testing laboratory.
Groundwater was encountered in the borings at about 7 to 11-ft depth.
Because the borings were drilled to penetrations extending below ground-
water, the borings were permitted, as required by local regulations, with the San
Joaquin Local Health District. At the end of each day, that day's boreholes were
backfilled by filling the borehole from bottom to the ground surface with a
pumped Volclay grout. The grouting operation was witnessed by an inspector from
the Local Health District.
The descriptions of the materials encountered in the borings are presented
on the boring logs, Plates 3 through 9. These boring logs are based on the field
logs, visual inspection of the samples obtained, and laboratory test results. A
description of most of the terms and symbols used on the boring logs is provided
on Plate 10.
Field Electrical Resistivity Survey
Field electrical resistivity measurements were conducted in December 1988 at
three locations (ER-1 through ER-3) as shown on Plate 2. Two locations (ER-1 and
ER-2) were in the southern area of the site. A third location (ER-3) was in the
northeastern area.
The field electrical resistivity measurements were conducted with a Vibro-
ground, Model 293 instrument in conjunction with a 4-pin, equal electrode spac-
ing, Wenner configuration, in accordance with ASTM 57-78. Electrode spacings
ranged from 3 to 12 feet with an equal spacing increment of 3 feet. Testing was
done over relatively flat ground, except where the ground surface was hummocky.
Ground undulations rarely exceeded 1 foot but occasionally were larger than 2
feet.
In addition to the three surface measurements, one measurement was made for
comparison, across a glass pile, to the south of the "plant" area.
