10
%W ..0
present in trenches at the site. Portions of an east-west access road to the
south of the plant site are covered by pulverized glass.
Numerous large 5- to 10-ft-tall piles of glass are present south of the
east-west plant area. Glass piles also are present to the northwest of the plant
area. Trenches running north-south are present to the northwest.
A water well was noted to the southwest of the plant site. The status of
this well is unknown, although an overhead electrical line and thick vegetation
in low areas around the well may suggest some active pumping. North-south rows
of electrical poles are present on either side of the site and an east-west row
crosses south of the site. An elevated water tower is present northeast of the
site.
Vegetation. Vegetation is abundant over the site and consists primarily of
grasses, thistles, and tumbleweeds. Thistles and brushes were commonly 12 to 18
inches high. The heaviest vegetation appeared to be in low areas within the
southwest and northwest portions of the project site. Vegetation coverage also
appears to be related to the amount of glass on the surface and in the soil.
Generalized Subsurface Stratigraphy and Conditions
Basis of Interpretation. Subsurface stratigraphy and foundations conditions
at the project site were explored by eight soil borings. Detailed descriptions
of the materials encountered in the soil borings are given in individual boring
logs presented on Plates 3 through 9.
In addition to these borings, observations in five trenches excavated (by
others but observed by a McClelland representative) in March 1988, provide
information with respect to shallow subsurface conditions. The locations of the
March 1988, trenches can only be approximated as surveyed locations were not
provided. Plate 12 reproduces, from our April 1988 letter, the pictorial loca-
tion map and trench logs.
Stratigraphy. Subsurface materials appear to have been altered over much,
if not all, of the site by the glass disposal activities discussed previously.
All borings in the south and central portion of the project site encountered some
evidence of glass. The presence of glass ranges from a matrix of glass cullet
that includes little soil to intermixed soil and glass to soil with some glass
fragments. Ash that appears to be a burn trench residue also was encountered.
The soil intermixed with the glass is most commonly a silty sand, although clay
McClelland
1144A/CC-10 ,EA
