25
.r Vlor —
To compute the estimated settlements shown on Plates 42 through 44, we used
compression parameters that are considered typical of a compacted structural sand
fill to represent the subsurface in the zone of improved materials. For total
removal and replacement with compacted structural fill, the thickness of improved
or replaced materials (shown on Plate 42 through 44) will be 16 ft. For the
partial removal and recompaction options, the thickness of improved or replaced
materials equates to the depth of removal below the existing ground surface. For
DDC treatment, we would anticipate settlements to be less than the estimated
settlements for an 8 ft thickness of improved soils. We anticipate post DDC
settlement to be equivalent to a 12 to 16 ft depth of improvement.
Because the soils are predominantly granular materials, significant portions
of the settlements will occur relatively rapidly as, and shortly after, the loads
are applied. We suggest that one half of the values shown on Plates 42 through
44 be considered as immediate settlements.
FOUNDATION DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS
Turbine and Boiler Mat Foundations
Location, Size and Loads. The boiler and turbine are to be located in the -
south central part of the "plant" area. Foundation mat sizes and anticipated
loads, as supplied by PSE, are given in the following table:
Foundation Estimated Estimated Gross Static
Dimensions (ft) Load (kips)' Bearing Pressure (psf)
Turbine 81 x 15 1,140 940
Boiler 86 x 22 2,130 1,130
•Including 3.5- to 4-ft-thick foundation mat. ,
Recommended Foundation Type and Depth. Extensive glass deposits are present
at the location of the boiler and turbine. Thus, we recommend that these two
pieces of equipment be founded on piles driven into the sands that are present at
about El -20 to -25 ft. Allowing for tip penetration into the sand, the planned
grade raise at the site, and embedment into the pile caps, the pile order lengths
are anticipated to be about, or slightly greater than, 40 ft.
1144A/CC-25McClelland
