• SAFETY AND HANDLING
ANHYDROUS AMMONIA
SAFETY
HEALTH HAZARD—The liquid and vapor are both strong irritants to the skin, eyes, mucous membranes and
respiratory system.Direct exposure will cause severe burns.Inhalation of as low as 400 ppm will cause
irritation.Stronger concentrations cause more severe irritation that may result in death by asphyxiation.
FIRST AID—WATER
SKIN OR MUCOUS MEMBRANE CONTACT—Immediately(lush contacted area with water.Quick
reaction can reduce the severity of the burn.Continue flushing for 15 minutes.Remove clothing only
after it is thoroughly wetted.Do not apply salves or creams to burn for at least 24 hours.
EYE CONTACT— Immediately flush with clean water.Hold eyelids open to assure complete flushing.
Continue flushing for at least IS minutes.Call a physician immediately.
INHALATION—Remove patient to uncontaminated area.Minor exposure requires no treatment. If
breathing has been impaired, trained personnel should administer oxygen. If patient is not breathing
initiate artificial respiration immediately.
CALL A PHYSICIAN IN ALL CASES
EMPLOYEESAFETY
TRAINING— Each employee that will handle ammonia should be well trained in the subjects listed below.
1. Safe Handling Techniques
2. Potential Hazards
. 3. Safety Equipment
4. First Aid
5. Emergency Procedures
EQUIPMENT— Safety equipment is no substitute for careful handling.Since accidents are unpredictable,
safety equipment should be readily available, regularly inspected and carefully maintained to insure
operable condition. The following list of protective and safety equipment is required at each storage facility.
2—Full face respiratory devices
I —Pair goggles and/or full face shield per handler
I —Pair NH3 resistant gloves, boots, coat and apron per handler
I —Quick acting shower and bubble fountain or minimum of
_ 50 gallons of clean water
I — First aid kit
I --Fire extinguisher
FIRE HAZARD—Liquid is not combustible. Gas has flammable limits of 16 to 2507o in air.
—Storage tanks exposed to fire should be kept cool to prevent overpressuring.
—Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.
SPILLS—Spills and wash water should be contained to prevent discharge into sewers or waterways. Wear self-contained
breathing apparatus when approaching a large spill or leak. A water spray or fog effectively absorbs ammonia gas
but should be used on leaks only. Do not spray water on liquid ammonia because heat will be evolved increasing
the rate of vaporization.
Evacuate areas downwind of large leaks or spills. Keep spectators at a safe distance. Only approach leak or spill
from upwind.
WARNING SIGNS—Anhydrous ammonia is classified by DOT as: "NON FLAMMABLE GAS". Shipments require
placarding as well as product identification on the vessels and bill of lading. (UN 1005)
Safety warning signs located at valves or connection points are recommended for each storage and transport tank.
