June 21, 2000
Job Number. L000-173
Page 11
Mass Balance Calculation
— The nitrate loading analysis was conducted to determine the nitrate concentration of the
combined septic effluent, wine barrel wash, and deep percolating rain water after biological
denitrification of septic effluent. No agricultural sources were considered because the agricultural
system is considered to be in balance. The estimated average concentration of the percolate was
determined prior to mixing and diluting with existing ground water. Assumptions and calculations
for the analysis are shown on Tables 5 and 6. The units of nitrate in used in the mass balance
equation is nitrate-N with a maximum drinking water contaminate level of 10 mg/1-
Table 5.
General Assumptions, Quantities and Levels Regarding Nitrate Sources
Source Nitrate Concentration Water Quantity Comment
Ground water 2.1 mg/L as NO3 or(0.47 NA Nitrate level measured in well.
mg/L-N
Deep percolating rain 0.17 mg/1-N7.86 in over 20 Existing source see Table 4 for
water acre site about details.
570,636 cf/yr of
deep percolating
min water
Agricultural: Nitrate concentration of soil Drip irrigation Assumption.Due to regular
soil amendments, amendment is unknown, rate is unknown. nitrate testing and vineyard
fertilizer fertilizer was applied at 20 management, the agricultural
gal/actyr CAN17 system is considered in balance.
Wine barrel wash 9.9 mg/L-N" 20,000 to 50,000 Assumption. The 9.9 mg/L-N
gals/yr or concentration is probably
55 to 137 gal/day conservative and assumes wine
barrel wash water is less then the
maximum drinking water
contaminate level of 10 mg/L-N.'
Litrfluent
age/septic Human level(0.45mg/L-N) 26,280 gal/yr or See Table 3 for details.
oncentration +Ground-water level(0.47 72 gal/day
m - *0.8=36m -N
_ 9 Hantzshe N.N.,Finnemore,E.J. 1991,Predicating Ground-Water Nitrate-Nitrogen Impacts.
