LOGE 1714: Delicato SS/NLS Addendum Page 5
July 18, 2017
The estimated sewage flow rates for various uses are available from a number of references.
The uses presented below were guided by the San Joaquin County On-Site Wastewater
Disposal Standards (2003), Crites and Tchobanoglous (1998), and EPA(1980). The references
indicate that 13 gallons for each employee is typical for an office or industrial worker and 3
gallons is typical for a bar customer; these rates were used for the winery and tasting room
(Crites and Tchobanoglous, 1998). For the special event customer, an intermediate flow rate of
5 gallons per customer was selected. The nitrate as nitrogen (N) concentration of the waste
water from the employee, tasting room, and event use is estimated to be 85-mg/L.
In addition to the winery uses, the existing three-bedroom residence on the selected portion of
the Site is considered for the nitrate loading. Crites and Tchobanoglous (1998) list atypical
flow rate of 50 to 70 gallons per person per day for an individual residence. The San Joaquin
County Enviromental Health Department has indicated that maximum flow and double
occupancy within each bedroom should be considered for the nitrate loading assessment; as a
result, a value of 140 gallons per bedroom per day has been selected (personal
communication, January 6, 2017). The typical nitrate as N concentration of mixed-source,
untreated domestic wastewater, 35 mg/L, is selected for the residence (Crites and
Tchobanoglous, 1998).
The estimated flow values discussed here should not be used for the design and sizing of the
septic system. The design and sizing of the septic system should utilize the San Joaquin
County Environmental Health On-Site Wastewater Disposal Standards which incorporates peak
and surge flow factors. The estimates used in the On-Site Wastewater Disposal Standards
may be greater than those discussed here.
No contributions from crop irrigation or soil amendments are considered for the
Hantzsche/Finnemore method. It is reasonably assumed that the irrigation and soil
amendments would be applied at close to agronomic rates for a net balance of plant irrigation
and nutrients.
No contribution from winery process water is considered; water generated by the winery is
stored on-site in ponds and/or land-applied to the fields. These water uses are addressed by
the Regional Board's Waste Discharge Requirements and Monitoring and Reporting Program;
per our earlier conversation, winery process water should be excluded from the nitrate loading
analysis (personal communication, March 9, 2017).
The maximum average daily flow for the Site was estimated to be 5,871.8 gallons per day
(gpd). Through the use of a weighted average, the average concentration of all the different
effluent flows and concentrations was determined to be 81.4 mg/L-N at 5,871.8 gallons per
day. Please see the following tables:
