% ..r
January 14,2003
Job Number:LG02-460
Page 9
sands and some muck soils are the only soils where ammonium leaching may be significant.
One way to minimize N leaching and denitrification is to minimize the time the N is in the soil
before plant uptake. This cuts down on the time when conditions are favorable for losses.t0
Proper management of agricultural property significantly reduces the potential nitrate impact to
ground water.
According to Phillip Martin, recommendations for the application of fertilizer and irrigation for
crops grown on the property are provided by Phillip Domena of Simplot. Since the fertilizer
application for crops are made by an agricultural consultant, we will assume that nitrogen losses
to ground water are minimized to the best extent possible using current agricultural practices.
Any leaching of nitrogen to ground water will not be considered in the nitrate loading balance.
6.3 Nitrate Loading Analysis
The nitrate loading analysis was performed for two (2) different scenarios; a 10 acre parcel with a
residence and SDU and a 43.3 acre parcel with a residence and SDU. The nitrate loading
analysis has indicated that using the stated assumptions, the Nc value for the 10 acre parcel may
reach a concentration of 10-mg/L-N. The water quality goal of no greater than10 mg/L(Nc) is
recommended for the percolating effluent on each parcel. The use of a 2-bedroom second
dwelling unit in addition to a 3 bedroom residence on the 10 acre Parcel 1 may cause a build up
of nitrates in the ground water up to 10 mg/L-N. The concentration of 10 mg/L-N in drinking
6. water is the maximum contaminate level for nitrate. The Nc concentration for the 43.3 acre
designated remainder parcel is below 10 mg/L-N. The calculations are presented on Plates 5 and
6 in the appendix. A summary of the nitrate loading analysis is presented next.
L
6.
Vitosh,M.L.,J.W.Johnson and D.B.Mengel,July 1995.Tri-state Fertilizer Recommendations for
Com,Soybeans,Wheat and Alfalfa,Extension Bulletin E-2567.
OEQ
