VALLEY AG
R E S E A R C R
i JUL - 5 2001
ENVInk-l9 ;-EALTH
June 12, 2001 PER"! ` ^„>i;'ES
FOR: San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department
Mr. Mike Huggins, R.E.H.S., R.D.I.
304 East Weber Avenue
Stockton, CA 95202
PROJECT: LA-00-57. Property Address:18404 South North Ripon Road. SR#0026115
SUBJECT: Nitrate Loading Study -Report Addendum
INTRODUCTION
Reference is made to my Nitrate Loading Study/Soil Suitability Study (NLS-06.00) dated
November 1, 2000. On June 12,2001, 1 received a request by the San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Department dated June 8, 2001 for additional information. According to the
San Joaquin County Development Title, Section 9-830,two residences may be built on a single
parcel. The calculations in my Study for nitrate loading originating from the proposed septic
systems address one house per parcel. Consequently,the nitrate loading must now be calculated
for the potential of two houses per parcel.
REVISED NITRATE LOADING CALCULATIONS
As stated in the initial Nitrate Loading Study, it is my opinion that the Hantzche/Finnemore
equation is the most applicable method to quantify to nitrate-nitrogen loading for the project.
Therefore, this equation will be used to assess the possibility of 16 houses within the proposed
project. This represents the "worst-case scenario,” which must be anticipated. The data used in
the original study will be used again in the following calculations.
HA NTZSCHEIFINNEMORE EQUATION
Ljw(1 - d)+RNb
Nr= (I + R)
Where:
Nr= Resultant average concentration of nitrate-nitrogen in recharge water- (ppm NO3-N)
I = Volume rate of wastewater entering the soil averaged over the gross developed area in
inches per yr
Nw= Total nitrogen concentration of wastewater in N mg/L (66 mg N/L/day)
d = Fraction (%) of nitrate-nitrogen loss due to denitrification in the soil
R = Average recharge rate of rainfall - inches per yr(11 inches)
Nb= Background nitrate-nitrogen concentration of rainfall recharge, exclusive of wastewater
influences (ppm NO3-N)
Page 1 of 2
P.O.Boz 3794 1 Turlock,California 95381 1 (209)668-1403 1 Fax (209) 668-2598
