lftr ..'
INFORMATION SHEET
BROWNS LAKE RANCH, AND RIVERCREST VINEYARDS, INC. ORDER NO.
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
Rivercrest Vineyards, Inc. (Rivercrest) operates a winery at 18700 East River Road, northeast oTRipon
in San Joaquin County. The winery is on a 302 acre parcel owned by Browns Lake Ranch, which
consists primarily of vineyards. In July 1998, Rivercrest submitted a Report of Waste Discharge and
the appropriate filing fee for installation of a new winery. Operations at this winery are proposed to
expand in five phases over the next eight years. Maximum discharges from the winery will be
approximately 150,000 gallon per day and will occur during the crush season, generally between
August and October.
Grape wastes from the primary fermentation process in the winery are sent to the vineyard where they
are tilled into the soil, or are hauled off-site to a compost facility. Wastes from the secondary
fermentation process are filtered and then hauled off-site as a solid waste.
Wastewaters from the winery are screened and are discharged to a holding pond, which covers
approximately 2 acres. The holding pond is also used to collect stormwater runoff and irrigation
collected from the tile drains in the-adjacent almond orchards. Excess wastewater may be reclaimed
for irrigating the adjacent vineyards and almond orchards.
Depth to shallow groundwater is approximately 20 to 25 feet. The shallow soils are sandy/silts to
silty/sands with relatively high permeability rates. Process water is obtained from an on-site supply
well. There are no groundwater monitoring wells at the facility. Preliminary groundwater quality data
indicate elevated levels of nitrates and total dissolved solids.
Under these Waste Discharge Requirements, effluent, pond, and groundwater monitoring will be
required. Groundwater monitoring wells will need to be installed to monitor shallow groundwater. A
determination of whether groundwater has been impacted by pond discharges shall be made.
Monitoring data will be used to determine whether wastewater treatment and/or pond mitigation efforts
are necessary.
tro
C:tPwj—Fi1.1Sit.1&iw m\a info.d.
