Rond Road Page 6
Our Project Number: E07025A
March 15, 2007
According to Ms. Gallego, when a chemical for which a permit has been issued is applied to a
field, the use report must be filed with the Agricultural Commissioner. The use reports do
not include chemicals for which a permit is not required.9
The EPA's Restricted Use Products (RUP) Report10 was searched for the chemicals reportedly
applied to the subject property. Based on this source, it appears that, of the agricultural
chemicals reportedly applied to the subject property, only those containing paraquat
dichloride and methomyl are RUPs. The U.C. Davis Extension Toxicology Network (EXTOXNET)
web site" was consulted for additional information on these chemicals.
According to EXTOXNET, paraquat is a quaternary nitrogen herbicide classified as an RUP and
a highly toxic compound in EPA toxicity class I. Many cases of illness and/or death have been
reported in humans. The compound is moderately toxic to birds and many aquatic organisms.
The chemical is highly persistent in the soil environment, with reported field half-lives of
greater than 1000 days. Studies have shown the half life in water to be as fast as 13.1 hours
and up to 23 weeks.
According to EXTOXNET, methomyl is a broad spectrum insecticide classified as an RUP by the
EPA because of its high acute toxicity to humans. Methomyl is highly soluble in water, has a
soil half-life of 33 days, and its adsorption to soil particles is weak to moderate.
Consequently, methomyl has been identified as a potential groundwater contaminant.
3.1.5 Water Supply and Sewage Disposal System
The EHD well and septic permit files were searched on February 13, 2007 in an effort to
obtain copies of permits for any water wells or septic tanks on the subject property; no
permits were found.
3.1.6 Department of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources
The California Department of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR) well maps 610 Et
61112 were reviewed for evidence of oil or gas wells on or in the vicinity of the subject
property. No wells are depicted within one-quarter mile of the subject property.
3.1.7 Site Reconnaissance
A visual reconnaissance of the subject property was conducted on March 5, 2007.
Photographs of the subject property are attached to this report as Appendix B. A site
visit/assessment checklist is attached to this report as Appendix D.
9 Personal Communication, November 28, 2005.
10 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), June 2003, Restricted Use Products (RUP) Report.
11 University of California, Davis, Extension Toxicology Network (EXTOXNET),
http://extoxnet.orst.edu/ghindex.htmi
12 California Department of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources, well map 610 li 611.
NEIL 0 .
