A nn
ATTACHMENT 2
COMMON INTERMODAL FACILITY TERMS
Main Line The Union Pacific's Main Line Railroad Track. All tracks in the facility are served from the
main line. Lathrop Road crosses over the Main Line and the Main Line Crosses Roth
Road at-grade.
Bobtail The tractor portion of a tractor-trailer. In other words, a truck that is not pulling a trailer.
Cargo Unit A closed cargo container used to transport goods.A cargo unit may be a shipping
container of 20', 40,48'or 53' length, which is placed on a chassis for transport, or a truck
trailer. This term is used interchangeably with the word"container".
Container Bay A parking spot where a chassis bearing an intermodal container or truck trailer is parked
while awaiting transport to be loaded onto a rail car, or awaiting to be driven off-site by a
semi tractor.
Double-Stack Unit A railcar designed with a low center of gravity that can carry two intermodal container
units, one stacked on top of the other. Typically one or more units with articulated wheels
are connected to improve ride-ability so as to protect fragile cargo from damage.
Engine-Ready Track 'Track used specifically to stage engines for a short time until they leave the yard.
Gantry Crane A rubber tired overhead crane used to lift containers between rail cars and truck chassis
as a train is being loaded or unloaded.
Hostler A diesel tractor used to move containers within the facility
IWTP This is Union Pacific's standard modular on-site industrial waste treatment system. These
systems are commonly installed at Union Pacific rail yards and can be customized
according to local climate and regulations
Lift The loading or unloading of a cargo unit to or from a rail car.
,Support Track A railroad track within the intermodal facility where rail cars are temporarily parked upon
arrival to the yard,or when waiting to depart from the yard,
Switching Lead A track used by yard locomotives in the process of moving rail cars from one track to
another. For example, due to geometric constraints, if a yard locomotive needed to move
a cut of 20 rail cars from one track to another, it would pull all the cars onto the switching
lead and then push them back onto the proper track. The proposed switching lead is not a
part of the Use Permit.
Track Foot A unit of measure defining the operational length of a railroad track along its centerline.
Working Track A railroad track within the intermodal facility where rail cars are parked during loading or
unloading operations.
I
i
11
I
