Hog Island Conceptual Design Statement
February 28, 2005
Phase I
A new 40 foor dock and gangway for drop-off will lead visitors to a cleared trail looping along
the upland and riparian area and leading to the lower beach flats.
Two camping areas will be developed. One special use camping area with a restroom and tent
platforms on the lowland beach flats will be used by school groups. Another camping area with
restroom and tent platforms will be available for public camping.
Phase II
Main Dock for day use and some overnight camping will give direct access to the island's upland
area and visitors/conference center.A trail system will lead visitors along an interpretive nature
walk,to various camping sites, day use areas, and interpretive displays.
The conference/visitors center displays will highlight the Delta's natural and cultural history. The
prominent location and 360degree views will make the visitors center a destination for both
public and private groups both as a place to visit and a place for specific venues.
Adjacent to the main visitors/conference center is an open sided structure that can be used as a
classroom, meeting hall, or space for special events. In addition,an amphitheatre looking out to
the channel is the perfect place for cultural and private events.
A recreated Native American village will serve as an additional cultural and environmental
education display.Demonstrations will show how Native Americans used local delta plants and
other resources for food shelter and ceremony.Portions of the village would also serve as a
special reserved camping area.
A variety of camping areas equipped with restrooms will accommodate a variety of users from
large groups to private limited access reserved. Special tent platforms and use areas will
concentrate use and impact.
Designated shoreline and dock accessible day use areas will encourage specific high use areas
limiting impact on the diverse natural habitat of the island.
At full development,Hog Island will be a rich treasure fostering cultural and environmental
appreciation through education outreach to school groups as well as allowing easy access to
locals for day use and overnight camping, with facilities available for conferences, workshops
and private venues. The riparian, marsh and upland areas will have a dynamic trail and boardwalk
system with interpretive signage and elements keeping impact to limited focused areas, thereby
preserving the extensive and diverse habitats on the island.
