Half of each Island was located both the east and west side
of the Channel and the old river area was filled,to make the remnants on both sides islands. This Island is on the west side of the
Channel and is now designated Spud Island on the latest U.S. Geological Map. The Center will include natural and restored habitat,
nature walk areas, a recreated Native American village, camping and recreation areas, boat docking and a visitor/conference center.
The only access to the Island will be by boat. Privately owned boats will be used to bring most visitors to the Island. On occasion, larger
pontoon boats will be used to ferry groups, especially school groups to the Island. These boats may disembark from private marinas in
Stockton or the Port of Stockton.
Approximately 70%of the Island will be preserved in natural habitat and 30%will be used for camping, recreation, nature walks and
educational opportunities. Structures, such as buildings, docks, tent platforms and boardwalk trails and overtook platforms will use less
than 3%when the project is completed. All buildings, except the Interpretative Outlooks, Interpretive Tower/Madna Office, and special
group camp area restrooms will be in the already disturbed dredge spoils area.
Visitor/Conference Center
The museum, conference center and observation tower of the Hog Island Visitor Center will provide a base for exploration of the island's
treasures and the Delta's values.
Museum displays will highlight the Delta's history, from its rich resources as used by Native Americans to its current unique role in
agriculture and commerce. Wildlife and ecology displays will teach visitors about the threatened Delta ecosystem and show them what
to look for during their island nature walks.
The conference center, with its sweeping views of Delta habitats and farmland, will provide an inspiring venue for both private and public
groups.
Nature Walks
Natural and restored habitat areas will be laced with trails and boardwalks to allow visitors to take in the scenery and watch for wildlife.
Some areas will have limited access only to protect them from excessive human activity. Interpretive signs and overlooks will enhance
the learning experience.
Native American Village
A re-created Native American village will foster cultural and environmental appreciation by showing how the native people used Delta
resources without significant disturbance to its systems. Demonstrations will show techniques used by Native American people to
cultivate and harvest Delta plants, and fashion them into tools, utensils and everyday necessities.
F:\DEVSvc\Planning Application Forms\Use Permit.(Revised 6-03-04) Page 2 of 9
