Riechers Spence & Associates Job #: 21 02 049.0
Consulting Civil Engineers Date: 10/21/02
Based on experience at other wineries, the expected monthly distribution of
the annual flow is as follows:
September 15.0% March 6.0%
October 15.0% April 4.5%
November 10.5% May 6.0%
December 7.5% June 7.0%
January 4.0% July 8.5%
February 6.0% August 10_0%
TOTAL 100.0%
*These monthly flow distributions will be used in the water balance
calculations.
Complete Mix Activated Sludge (CMAS) Process Design for BOC removal
with Nitrification
Design criteria for the reactor sizing include the major wastewater
parameters: BOD, COD, total suspended solids (TSS),volatile suspended solids
(VSS) and the pH level. BOD is the biochemical oxygen demand (5-day test
at 200 C) while COD is the chemical oxygen demand (3h test). BOD is
approximately (0.4 -0.8) COD. The minimum reactor volume shall be set to
a size that guaranties a sufficient BOD reduction within the process
wastewater of 75%-95% during the average flow period. The typical BOD
load of winery wastewater during crush is 5,000 mg/I with peak loads
reaching up to 12,000 mg/l.
Qi, = 900 gpd = 900 * 3.7854 10-3 m3/d = 3.4069 m3/d
BODS = 10,000 mg/I (mg/I=g/m3)
Effluent constraints:
Effluent will have meet the criteria set forth by the RWQCB. Max BOD5
effluent concentration should not exceed 100 Ib/(acre*day) and the TKN
_ concentration should not exceed 20 Ib/(acre*year). With a wastewater flow
of 180,000 gallons the TKN effluent concentration = 20/180,000 Ib/gal for
every one acre. That results in a max TKN concentration of 13.31 mg/I (g/m3).
Therefore design effluent concentrations will be limited to 10 mg/I TKN, 50
mg/I BOD.
13
