JORGE WINERY SET TO KICK OFF MUSIC SERIES WITH INDEPENDENT FLAVOR By Jo Ann Kirby May 12,2012 Remrd Staff Writer One of the great things about living in the Valley is the proximity to so many small wineries. St. Jorge Winery in Acampo is a Mediterranean-style oasis set amongst the vineyards with a lush courtyard where a musical series will invite guests to dine,sip wine and listen to an acoustic performance by an up-and-coming artist. On May 18, singer Mindy Smith of Nashville will kick off the series by performing songs from her upcoming self- titled album. "We are going to launch it in June. It's completely independent.There are so many elements that are completely terrifying and exciting about going independent"Smith said, adding that she is looking forward to breaking in the new songs at the St. Jorge event."I'm really looking forward to coming out to California" Smith said her musical style is as varied as her tastes-bluegrass, pop, country, rock and even jazz. "It's hard to define me," Smith said. "I love what I love" She has several albums to her credit and a hit duet with long-time friend Daniel Tashian. Their song"Taking You With Me"is featured in the film and on the soundtrack to the newest Paul Rudd film,"Our Idiot Brother." Smith's appearance at St.Jorge Winery will follow a wine tasting and a sit-down dinner with dessert. It's a perfect sort of date night. Jeff Herbst of Stockton,who is producing the event along with his wife, Lisa,said it's a low-key evening that's both relaxed and refined. Herbst has singer Lori McKenna lined up for the June 29 date and Victoria George on Aug. 29. The St.Jorge Winery features wines crafted by the Vierra family in the Portuguese style. Because of a controversy over permitting with the county,the series is considered three of the four special events that the winery is allowed to have each year. "We are being a good neighbor,"Jenise Vierra of St.Jorge Winery said, adding that a proposed county moratorium is impacting the number of weddings, performances and other events wineries can host and has proved to be costly for the winery. "We had to take out these special event permits,which used up how many future events we can host." And while fans of Smith are looking forward to hearing her songs,Smith said she's looking forward to the wine tasting. "They sent me a bottle of the wine to sample and it was amazing,"Smith said.
