./ KLEINFELDER
4 SITE RECONNAISSANCE
4.1. METHODOLOGY AND LIMITING CONDITIONS
Mr. Kevin Staples, Kleinfelder Staff Engineer, conducted a site reconnaissance on June 28, 2002
to assess and photograph present site conditions. The approximate site boundaries are shown on
Plate 1, "Site Map," and color photographs of the site are presented on Plates 2 and 3 (Appendix
A). The site conditions discussed below are limited to readily apparent environmental conditions
observed.
4.2. GENERAL SITE SETTING
The subject site consists of a 12.76-acre parcel to the west of Thornton Road and a 20-acre parcel
to the east of Thornton Road, just north of Highway 12 in San Joaquin County, California. The
western portion of the site consists of a vacant field with large amounts of grass and trees
throughout this area. There are no structures present. Transmission lines are trending
southwest/northeast across the northwest corner of this area. The eastern portion of the site
consists of a graded vacant field, and a fast-food restaurant, which encompasses approximately 5
acres along the southern border of this area. The northern 15 acres of this area consist of a
vineyard.
Eastern Parcel
The surface is well graded and being prepared for commercial development into a carwash. A
_ canal is present at the southeastern corner of the vacant lot, with underground piping trending
north through the site. A burn patch was noted in the central location of the eastern parcel (Plate
2, Photograph 8). Rubber standpipes, remnants of drip irrigation, were observed protruding
` approximately six inches out of the ground towards the north end of the vacant section of the
parcel (Plate 2, Photograph 10). The pipes were lined up and spaced equal distances apart,
trending east and west. Two trash pits are located towards the northwestern section of the lot
Plate 2, Photograph 11). There was an empty 55-carbdiesel #2 drum lying open on its side
towards the southwest corner of the parcel of vacant property (Plate 3, Photograph 16). A new
well is being installed in the northeast corner of the vacant field (Plate 3, Photograph 22).
Western Parcel
The section of Thornton Road which previously extended north and south through the property is
still widely evident in this area. A large amount of grass, shrubs and trees are present in the area.
A large soil pile is present to the north of the subject site.
4 18470.P01 /ST02R285 Page 8 of 14
Copyright 2002,Kleinfelder.Inc July 30,2002
