In general, the wastewater treatment plant was clean and well maintained.
A site inspection photograph log is enclosed with this letter. The following observations were made
during the site inspection:
• All winery wastewater is discharged to the treatment system. Wastewater generated in the eastern
facility is piped to the treatment system located at the western facility.
• Wastewater at the eastern facility is screened and pH neutralized prior to being pumped to the
western treatment facility. Wastewater at the western facility is screened and pH neutralized prior
to discharge to the treatment system sump. Wastewater from the east and west wineries are
mixed at the treatment system sump.
• Wastewater is pumped from the treatment sump to the treatment ponds. Two of the ponds are
presently used for treatment and are equipped with mechanical aerators. The other two ponds
originally constructed for treatment are not equipped with aerators, water is maintained in those
ponds to prevent the clay liners from drying out.
• . Wastewater is discharged from the treatment ponds to the constructed cattail wetland, to the
aeration lake, to the bulrush wetland, and into the storage lake. Wastewater can be pumped from
the storage lake to landscaped areas as irrigation water. Because the winery is in the process of
expansion, sufficient wastewater is not generated and water from the irrigation canal is added to
the wetland system to maintain the plant growth.
• Turner Road Vintners operates a regenerative water softener to treat wine products. The brine
from the regenerative water softener is discharged to the treatment sump.
• Slight odor was noted at the treatment sump, no odor was apparent at the treatment ponds,
wetlands, or storage lake.
The regenerative water softener is a concern because of the concentrated brine waste product. By
15 August 2000, please submit manufacturer's information on the regenerative water softener used at
the winery, information on the amount of brine generated, and the concentration of dissolved solids in
the brine.
California Environmental Protection Agency
V13.Recycled Paper
