• r
INFORMATION SHEET
SEBASTIANI VINEYARDS, INC
ORDER NO. 99-103
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
Sebastiani Vineyards, Inc. (Sebastiani) operates a winery at 4614 West Turner Road, west of Lodi in
San Joaquin County, under Waste Discharge Requirements (WDRs) Order No. 94-055. This facility
is known as Turner Road Vintners East (TRV East). Increases in wine production have necessitated
that Sebastiani construct a new winery and wastewater treatment/disposal system on the 63 acre
parcel where checks were formerly used for winery wastewater disposal. This new facility is known
as Turner Road Vintners West (TRV West), and is approximately 2/3 mile west of the TRV East
facility at 5852 West Turner Road.
Sebastiani plans to increase production levels from a current rate of approximately 30,000 annual
ton crush to a maximum rate of 100,000 tons annual crush (corresponding to approximately
650,000 gallons per day of wastewater). WDRs Order No. 94-055 are inadequate to regulate the
increased wastewater flows. In order to accommodate these increased flows, Sebastiani installed
a biological treatment facility using an Advanced Integrated Pond System (AIDS) and constructed
wetlands on 42 acres of the TRV West site. Wastewater from TRV East is pumped through a
pipeline along the southern edge of Turner Road to the TRV West facility. After treatment in the
AIPS and constructed wetlands, water is discharged to a storage lake where it can be used for
landscape irrigation.
The AIDS consists of four aerobic/anerobic ponds that provide_primary and secondary treatment of
the wastewater. Wastes are injected into the deep anerobic portion of the pond which is covered by
an aerobic zone where the wastewater is oxygenated using aerators. Biological solids generated
during aerobic treatment settle and decompose in the anerobic zone.
Tertiary treatment of the wastewater is conducted in the constructed wetlands. Wastewater drains
into and through a series of wetlands and ponds, which were designed, installed and vegetated to
promote mixing of the wastewater and to provide an adequate energy source for microbial treatment
by marsh bacteria.
The biological treatment using the AIPS and constructed wetlands is expected to reduce the
Biochemical Oxygen Demand concentration from an annual average of approximately 1600
milligrams per liter(mg/1) to 36 mg/l. Suspended Solids are expected to be reduced from an annual
average concentration of approximately 40 mg/1 to 12 mg/1. The AIPS and constructed wetlands
should reduce these concentrations by an average annual rate of about 97 percent.
An 8-acre storage lake is immediately west of the constructed wetlands and is used for flow equalization
and flood detention. Excess water from the constructed wetland will be reclaimed for landscape irrigation.
Stormwater at the TRV West and TRV East facilities is separated from the process wastewater using
designed collection/diversion sumps. Stormwater at TRV West is either discharged to the Woodbridge
Irrigation District's Villinger Lateral Canal or to the AIDS. Stormwater at TRV East is pumped to the
stormwater pond at the southern end of the facility.
28 July 1999
CKW:lm
