CROPLAND NITROGEN REQUIREMENTS
The cropland, which can all be irrigated with liquid waste mixed with District water through
pipelines, totals 510 acres. The acreage is rotated in silage corn and winter oats with the
following nitrogen requirements:
Corn silage=250 lbs N/Ac x 510 Ac= 127,500 lbs N required
Oats= 140 lbs N/Ac x 510 Ac= 71.400 lbs N required
TOTAL 198,900 lbs N required
Therefore, a theoretical nitrogen deficit of 198,900 lbs - 150,188 lbs=48,712 lbs of N occurs
on the cropland controlled by the Quaresma's if all solid manure is exported. If both solid and
liquid nutrients are applied to the cropland there is still a theoretical nitrogen deficit of 198,900
lbs - 189,512 lbs =9,388 lbs of N
IV. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The data and information presented above provides an approximate estimate of what is
occurring, and what is projected to occur at the facility with regard to nitrogen production, crop
utilization and environmental stewardship. There are numerous factors involved in adequately
assessing and correlating crop needs and uptake of available nitrogen. From the results of the
nitrogen balance equations, the amount of liquid nitrogen produced by the future dairy operation
is approximately 75% of the nitrogen needed for optimum crop growth, if all solids are exported.
The nitrogen produced by the expanded facility balances with the nitrogen required if all liquid
and solid manure is utilized.
When large numbers are formulated to assess nitrogen produced vs. nitrogen required, the margin
of error can be t10%. Therefore, it is recommended that sampling and analysis be performed on
the following items before and during each crop: 1.)Nutrients in the form applied, 2.) Cropland
soils and 3.) Tissue samples of the crops to check for N excess. By analyzing these different
parameters, it can best be determined which form of nutrient(liquid, solid or possibly inorganic
fertilizer)to apply to a particular field. Additionally, the Estimated Nitrogen Release (ENR)
must be taken into consideration when determining nutrient application quantities. This
quantifies potential nitrogen release from previous crop residues.
The procedures for determining crop nutritional needs, particularly nitrogen, without overloading
the cropland can be a complex process. In an effort to simplify the information required to make
best management decisions for optimum crop growth and nutrient utilization, we recommend the
Manure Analysis Reference Guide, published by A & L Agricultural Laboratories. It provides
one of the best sources of information to determine utilization of crop nutrients from confined
animal facilities. The suitable rate of solid and liquid applications is determined by the ability of
Lthe
soil and crop combination to immobilize and utilize the nutrients in the applied manure,
which is detailed on the Worksheets found in this Guide.
10
7la!&ey Ag Research
