6.
` September 30,2002
Job Number:LG02-335
Page 10
samples were submitted to Precision Enviro-Tech Analytical Laboratory for nitrate analysis on
September 25, 2002. The result of the samples are presented in the following table.
Table 6.
Nitrate Concentration of Soil in Almond Orchard.
=Side
Date Collected Nitrate ppm(mg/kg)
: 9-25-02 ND
e: 9-25-02 75
ND is non-detectable.
r
The soil samples obtained from the orchards indicate the nitrate concentration of the soil
ranges from non detectable to 75 parts per million(ppm). The west side soil sample was found to
be have a 75 ppm concentration of nitrate probably indicating residual nitrogen from a recent
fertilizer application. The east side sample was non detectable. Generally,no conclusions can be
` drawn regarding proper or improper care of the orchard. The nitrate level appears to be in a
normal typical range for cultivated orchard soil.
A visual inspection of the almond orchard indicates the orchard appears to be healthy and
cared for. For the purposes of this report, our office is assuming that the fertilizer applied is
applied in a correct manner. Our assumption is that leaching of nitrogen is minimal. There is no
records or knowledge regarding the past or present fertilization practices for the orchard. The
operator of the orchard was unavailable for an interview.
Nitrates from Chicken Manure
Chicken manure is a potential source of nitrogen. Chicken manure is used as a soil
fertilizer and contains organic nitrogen,NO3, and NH4. Chicken manure is a marketable waste
4 product and is used as a soil amendment for gardens and landscape.
The potential manure waste generating from the proposed12 00 0 egg laying chickens is 1,2
described in a manure plan prepared for the project. The manure plan indicates the wastelv
b. products will be sold and removed off the site by customers or haulers. The manure will not be .'`
applied to land on the site. The two manure ponds that were previously used for ma—e isposal e, s
r are planned to be abandoned as part of the proposed project.
