Given that a theoretical maximum number of Parishioners on any Sunday is expected tota1550
(350 Sunday AM+200 Sunday PM), the following flow volumes are deduced from the ata--
presented: If we assign a value of 75%of all Parishioners (i.e., adults, children) use the restrooms,
and each parishioner is assigned 2.0 gallons (1.5 gallons per flush plus 0.5 gallon wash water), we
find a Conserv tewater--flow volume of: 550 Sunday Parishioners x 75%=413 people x
2.0 gals/perso 826 m i um gals/Sunday. In addition, approximately 200 Parishioners will
attend Wednesd ng se ices. Again, using the calculations presented above-,we find: 200_
x 75%— 150 x 2 gals- 300 ions on Wednesday evenings. Therefore, the weekly flow volume
determined is: 826+ ,126 gallon/wk, or a calculated daily average of 1,126=7 — 161 gpd.
ANTICIPATED WASTEWATER CHARACTERISTICS
The characteristics of the wastewater flow will be black water from toilets and gray water from
sinks. It is my understanding there will be a Kitchenette but there will be no food preparation.
People will bring food from home. There will be an oven that will be used as a warming oven. It
is imperative that all food and food by-product wastes are handled as solid wastes and not be
disposed of into the septic system. This will prevent concentrated organic loading and prolong the
lifespan of the disposal system. Total Soluble Solids (TSS) originating from organics can also
create and enhance biomat formation between the native soil and effluent interface, thus
restricting infiltration. The biomat does have one beneficial property of removing approximately
10% of the nitrogen from the effluent.
Additional wastewater constituents may consist of coffee, juices or other similar type liquids to the
system. It is imperative that no industrial or commercial chemicals, solvents, excessive cleaners,
etc. are introduced into the septic system, as well as other items such as cloth, plastic, etc.
The new kitchen sink must not contain a garbage disposal and oils and grease must not be poured
down the sink drain. All fixtures (faucets, toilets, urinals) must be of the lowest flows available.
NLS§3.3. Table 6 below summarizes concentrations of septic tank constituents from various
sources. Effluent from a SJC Church without a kitchen was tested last year. A Total Kjeldahl
Nitrogen (TKN) concentration was determined to be 60.1 ppm, which will be used for this Study.
TKN is the summation of ammonia-nitrogen(NIJ4) and organic nitrogen (proteins, amino acids,
enzymes). Since the septic tank is predominately anaerobic, nitrogen cannot exist in its oxidized
state as nitrate for any length of time, and if it does, it is quickly reduced to NO or NO2. If nitrate
existed in the tank effluent, this would also be added to ammonium and organic nitrogen to arrive
at Total Nitrogen.
In addition, septic tank effluent concentrations from various researchers that have been published
in Small and Decentralized Wastewater Management Systems, along with septic tank effluent
concentrations for the constituents listed by the U.S.E.P.A. are also listed in the Table.
7
