I10 January 2001 <br /> AGE-NC Project No 98-0533 <br /> Page 2 of 6 " <br /> _ <br /> 32 SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS <br /> Discrete soil samples were collected ahead of the drill bit using a California-Modified split-spoon <br /> sampler loaded with three pre-cleaned 2-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves The samples were collected <br /> at five-foot intervals beginning at 5 feet bsg in borings B-3 and B-4 and at 15 feet bsg in B-1 and B- <br /> 2, using a 140-pound hammer to advance the sampler 18 inches The number of blows required to <br /> advance the sampler in 6--inch Increments (blow counts) was recorded on the boring logs <br /> Soil samples were preserved by covering both ends of the second brass sleeve with Teflon sheets, <br /> Icapping and sealing with tape Each preserved sample sleeve,was labeled with soil boring location, <br /> depth, time, date and sampler's initials and was stored in a chilled container under ice Soil <br /> encountered in the borings were visually classified by an AGE geologist in accordance with the <br /> Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) Additionally, soil samples were field screened for the <br /> presence of volatile organic compounds using an organic vapor meter(OVM) Selected soil samples <br />' were transported under chain-of-custody to McCampbell Laboratories, Inc , a State of California <br /> Department of Health Services (DHS)-certified laboratory and were analyzed for <br /> 0 Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as aviation gasoline (TPH-ag)in accordance with <br /> EPA Method 5030/8015M, <br /> C Volatile aromatic hydrocarbons benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) with <br /> methyl. tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) in accordance with EPA Method 8020, and <br /> Fuel oxygenates tertiary butanol (TBA), di-isopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyl tert-butyl ether <br /> (ETBE), tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME), and MTBE in accordance with EPA Method <br /> 8260B <br /> I <br /> 3 3 LOGGING } <br /> IThe soil sam le duplicates were utilized for field characterization The soil was screened for the <br /> presence op p <br /> f organic vapor using an organic`vapor ineter equipped with a photo-Ionization detector <br /> I (PID Thermo Environmental 580A, 10 OeV, calibrated to isobutylene), and the readings were <br /> recorded on the boring logs Soil was visually described in accordance with the Umfied Soil <br /> _ Classification'System (Boring Logs, Apprendix A) <br /> One grab ground water sample(B-2-75'-85')was collected from boring B-2 at between 75 to 85 feet <br /> bsg Samples from the grab ground water were collected into 40-m1 vials, labeled, placed in the <br /> chilled container and transported along with the soil samples to McCampbell Laboratories, Inc <br /> under chain-of-custody for analysis <br /> Advanced GeoEnvironmentai,Inc <br />
