Leacox
Harding Lawson Associates
3247 Ramos Circle
Sacramento, CA 95827
SLANT BORINGS WORK PLAN, USC STOCKTON FACILITY, SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
We have reviewed Harding Lawson Associates (HLA) workplan dated 28 April 1992.
HLA proposes the field investigation to characterize the vadose zone beneath
USC's surface impoundment to develop a closure plan. The following are our
comments to the workplan:
1. The surface impoundment wastewater characterization showed high TDS
including sodium and boron. USC personnel now adds phosphoric acid to
neutralize caustic solutions in the equalization tank. Therefore, in
addition to the proposed volatile, semi-volatile and metal analysis to
the selected six soil samples from the slant borings, a soluble
salts/general mineral analysis needs to be added to the proposed suite.
2. We suggest that HLA reserve a boring sample, not influenced by the
surface impoundment, for analysis of metals and minerals at an
appropriate lithologic interval for comparison if the chemical analysis
indicates leakage from the surface impoundment.
If you have any questions please call me at (916 ) 361-5738.
o', Y
JAh1ES BRATHOVDE
Associate Engineering Geologist
JEB
cc: Mr. Mike Inferna, San Joaquin County Environmental Health, Stockton
Mr. Kirk Moon, USC Stockton Facility, Stockton
