Work Plan for Additional Site Assessment 2
The Southland Corporation,Store#17647, 1048W.Yosemite Ave.,Manteca,CA October 26,1999
Total lead was analyzed for using EPA method 6010. Benzene was not detected; TPH-G concentrations
ranged up to 1,300 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) at the base of excavation and were non-detectable in
the sidewall samples. Soil MTBE levels were less than 0.02 mg/kg, and soil lead levels were up to
6.1 mg/kg. The SJCEHD requested further assessment upon receipt of the tank-pull findings.
On June 18, 1999, IT Corporation supervised the advancement of five GeoprobeTM points(GP-1 through
GP-5)at the site (Figure 2). Using a truck-mounted hydraulic drill and direct push techniques, one discrete
soil sample was collected from each of the soil borings from 15 feet below ground surface(BGS). After
completion, the borings were backfilled to grade with bentonite chips(saturated in place), and sealed at
grade to match the existing surrounding surface.
Soil samples were selected for laboratory analysis of BTEX and TPH-G using EPA Methods 8020/modified
8015, and for MTBE, tert-butanol(TBA), di-isopropyl ether(DIPE), ethyl-tert-butyl ether(ETBE), and tert-
amylmethyl ether(TAME) by EPA Method 8260. Hydrocarbon and oxygenate concentrations in all soil
samples were non-detectable, with the exception of 0.026 mg/kg MTBE detected at 16 feet below grade in
boring GP-3 (located at the northwest corner of the UST pit area).
Grab groundwater samples were collected at the total depth of each borehole using disposable bailers,
then transferred to 40-milliliter glass vials filled to zero headspace and acidified to a pH of 2. The
groundwater samples were analyzed for BTEX and TPH-G using EPA Methods 8020/modified 8015, and
for MTBE, TBA, DIPE, ETRE, and TAME by EPA Method 8260. The sample from goring GP-5 was also
analyzed for ethylene dibromide(EDB) and 1,2-dichlorethane(1,2-DCA) by EPA method 8260.
Groundwater analytical data for samples collected on June 18, 1999, are presented in Table 2. Benzene
was not detected. Dissolved TPH-G was non-detectable in all locations except GP-3 (19,400 lag/L)and
GP-4 (128 pg/L). Dissolved MTBE was only detected in location GP-3 (126 pg/L). Dissolved TBA, DIPE,
ETBE, and TAME were not detected in any of the samples collected. Dissolved EDB and 1,2-DCA were
not detected in the sample from GP-5.
TASK 1: SITE-SPECIFIC HEALTH AND SAFETY PLANIPERMITTING
A site-specific Health and Safety Plan has been prepared by IT Corporation as required by the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Standard "Hazardous Waste Operations and
Emergency Response"guidelines(29 CFR 1910.120). The document will be reviewed and signed by all
IT Corporation personnel and subcontractors performing work at the site.
IT Corporation will conduct a technical review of the pertinent information associated with the site.
Underground Service Alert(USA)will be contacted and requested to notify the local utility companies to
mark the location of underground utilities surrounding the site.
17647wkp.LTR
