` APPENDIX A
1 SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION AND SOIL SAMPLING
The subsurface investigation was performed on D4ay 4 Drilling
and 5, 1995 using a truck-mounted drill rig equipped
with a 8-inch hollow-stem auger. Five soil borings were
drilled to depths of approximately 15 feet and one soil
' boring was drilled to a depth of approximately 55 feet.
The standard penetration resistance blow counts were
' obtained by dropping a 140-pound hammer through a
30-inch free fall. The blows per foot recorded on the
' boring logs represent the accumulated number of blows
required to drive the sampler the last 12 inches of the
interval indicated. Soil samples were collected at
' approximately 5-foot depth intervals or significant
changes in lithography using a 2.5-inch diameter
modified California split-spoon sampler.
Soils encountered in the borings were logged using the
Unified Soil Classification System (ASTM D-2487). The
logs of the borings, as well as a key to the
classification of soil (Figure A-1), are included as part
of this appendix.
Soil samples for laboratory analysis were collected in Sampling Protocol
' brass liners, the ends covered in aluminum foil, taped
and capped with plastic end caps. The samples were
then labeled, placed in a chilled cooler, and
transported to a state-certified analytical laboratory
with chain of custody documentation. Soil from each
sample was also monitored with an ovM. Soil was
placed in a ZiplockTM bag. After a minimum of five
minutes, the ovM probe was used to pierce the bag
and record the organic vapor levels present.
