QUARTERLY REPORT
' March 1994
Art & Artists
204 East Lodi Avenue
Lodi, CA
' 1.0 INTRODUCTION
In accordance with a request from Mr. James DeMera of Mullen, Sullivan & Newton,
' Geological Audit Services,Inc. (GeoAudit) has prepared this report summarizing monitoring
activities performed during the first quarter of 1994 at 204 East Lodi Avenue in Lodi,
California (the site; Figure 1). Groundwater samples were collected from six monitoring
' wells at the site. The purpose of the field work was to monitor the lateral extent of
petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater. -
2.0 BACKGROUND
2.1 Tank Removal
It is our understanding that a 550-gallon underground storage tank (UST) was removed
from this site in January 1987 by Thorpe Oil, Inc. The tank contained Ieaded gasoline, and
was located inside a large building, near the building's southeast comer (Figure 2). The UST
had failed an integrity test, and a soil sample collected from beneath the tank indicated that
an unauthorized release of hydrocarbons had occurred. Total petroleum hydrocarbons as
gasoline were detected at a concentration of 1,400 mg/kg, toluene was detected at a
' concentration of 270 mg/kg, and xylenes were detected at 18 mg/kg. The San Joaquin
County Public Health Services - Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) subsequently
required investigation of groundwater quality at the site to determine whether groundwater
' had been impacted by the release.
2.2 Installation of Monitoring Wells MW-1 Through MW-3
Three soil borings were drilled in July 1987 and completed as MW-1, MW-2, and MW-3.
' The sampling performed during this phase of the investigation indicated that the impacted
soil was limited to the vicinity of the former tank. No petroleum hydrocarbons were present
in soil samples from MW-2 or MW-3, but high concentrations were present in soil samples
' from MW-1. However, petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in groundwater from all three
wells.
Afi.n ORM_W-L47
r
