1
Soil Suitability/ Nitrate Loading Study Addendum Letter
Lange Twins Winery : Acampo, California Irerracon
May 21, 2019 N Terracon Project No. NA197005
The maximum daily flow for the existing facility during peak hours is 2,402 gpd. The special
events may add an additional 4,000 gallons of effluent to the system per event day for a max daily
flow total of 6,402 gpd. The addition of the proposed development and special events appears to
be within the existing and proposed tank holding capacity of 12,700 gpd. There were no concerns
reported in connection with the existing septic system.
Nitrate as N levels for the existing facility were based on long term average daily flow rates for
each system. The average daily flow for the existing facility, plus the proposed development and
special events during peak hours was calculated to be approximately 1,568 gpd. Nitrate levels
for the existing facility is anticipated between 9.0 mg/L-N during peak hours or up to 10.2 mg/L-N
when a special event occurs. The proposed development is anticipated to add 1.9 mg/L N which
increases nitrate as N levels to 12.1 mg/L-N slightly above the MCL of 10 mg/L-N.
In general, the parcel appears suitable for the development of the future tasting stand alone
restroom building and future administration building. Terracon recommends the septic system
construction should follow the San Joaquin County OWTS where applicable.
Limitations
Our study takes into account the subject property only with the sewage load applied over the
property site area. The study does not take into account surrounding properties and/or lands.
The method utilized for the nitrate loading analysis is based on a simple mass balance formula,
discussed in a published article by Hantzsche and Finnemore (1992), which provides a
convenient and simplified method to estimate long-term groundwater nitrate impacts on an area-
wide basis. A more detailed analysis was not requested nor intended.
Our professional services were performed, our findings obtained, and our conclusions proposed
in accordance with generally accepted engineering principles and practices.
