yards of overburden, according to the applicant's est.i-
mate: , will be -Atracted and sold as landfill,.
The applicant will also rework the tailings to Extract
geld that was not removed during previous gold mining.
This aspect will involve the use of the sams processing
equi.prrDnt used for the sand and gravel. Due to present
dad; technology and market prices, a corn izercially
marketable quantity of gold may be Extractable.
Secondary, Long-range pian objectives include a seccc nd,
5 year excavation, project on the subjact pa -cel. . Specific
plans and objectives of this second project are not
presently known. Consequently, the discussion of en-Jiron-
mental impacts contained in this report is limited to the
pre—>ent 5 year project. If an application is later sub-
mitt.e:l for a second 5 year excavation project, the
requirement of another environmental impact report *1atT
be warranted.
C. Characteristics
Map 2 gives an overview of the project boundaries and
excavation and reclamation plans.
1. Excavation and Processi.nq
Table I gives the excavation timetable and the t-ol.um,
of materials to be removed in each phase. The materials
to be excavated in each phase inclu.ele some mix cf tail---
ings and overburden. The basic difference between
tailings anc. overburden is that overbz,-den consists of
topsoil overlying useful geological deposits, while the
tai?--ngs are useful geological deposit, previously
excavated and left in mounds about the project area.
The Preliminary Environmental Assessment submitted by
the applicant contains two statements that seem incon-
sistent. In one part of the P.E.A. o it states that the
maximum depth of excavation will be 20 feet; another
part states that the maximum depth of overburden to be
removed will be 3 feet. The inconsistcncy is that in
sor::c areas there are no tailings, only overburden.
For this report, it will be assumed that the 20 foot
excavation depth applies to bosh tailings and to those
areas VhichL havc overburden but not tailings.
Maximum working slopes will be 1.5 :1 and final slopes
will be 2 :1 or flatter. E.:cavati.on work will be kept
a minimum of 50 feet from any, property line. No pipe-
lines, canals., or rivers will be crossed.
Extracted aggregate will be processed on-site as noted
above. Processing water will be proti i.dcd by an on-site
well with a pumping capacity of 800 gai.1cns per minute.
-3-
