-5-
sedimentation ponds and for livestock watering.
The operator has been advised that continued use
of these as sedimentation ponds may require a permit modifi-
cation.
We are working with the operator to develop
the excavated portion of Area I to provide adequate
storage volume and. sedimentation time. without utilizing the
ponds outside the project area.
2) Vegetative Screening:
The vegetative screening, "suggested" by former
Planning Director Robert Hunter, has been destroyed by
livestock.
The operator has been advised that replacement of
vegetation is necessary.
Utilization of plant materials , other than those
"suggested" by Mr. Hunter, may be appropriate .
3) Side Slopes Steeper Than 2:1 :
Although some side slopes of the perimeter dikes
in the excavation area are steeper than 2 :1, there appear to
be no slope stability or erosion problems . The operator has
started re-shaping the exterior slopes.
Of greater concern are the side slopes of the
sedimentation ponds, within the permit area, which exceed 1:1.
Linden Aggregate began operating this facility in November
1986 . However, the existing facility required extensive improve-
ments which were made between March and July, 1987 . Production
began again in August 1987 .
In general, it appears that the operator has made substantial
efforts to develop an efficient and economical facility. The
operator has indicated that clean-up operations have included the
. removal of approximately 95 tons of scrap iron, 20 loads of non-
salvageable junk, and the sale of salvageable equipment.
I will be pleased to address any questions regarding this re-:
port at the convenience of the Commission.
Respectfully submitted,
Lawrence B .
