1_
for analyses of Total Volatile Hydrocarbons, EAB (ethylene
dibromide) and Lead. A sixth soil sample was collected from the
bottom of the excavation for the waste oil tank. This sample was
analyzed for oil and grease and PCB's. The results of all the
Y analyses are presented in Table 1.
CONCLUSIONS
The initial hydrogeologic investigation for the Exxon
f Service Station indicated a depth to groundwater of approxi-
mately ..48 feet at the site. The aquifer is separated from
surface. contamination and runoff by significant thicknesses of
stiff, silty and, sandy clays. No hydrocarbon vapors were
detected in either of the two monitoring well borings or four
f -
sail:borings. Minor amounts of soil contamination by hydro^
carbons were first detected on site during the excavation and
i. removal of the product storage tanks and the waste rail tank.
d_
i The results of the soil sample analyses indicated relatively low
0.
levels of hydrocarbon and lead contamination except in the sample
obtained from beneath the central storage tank. However, as
previously discussed, the contaminated area was relatively :small
r and .was. most likely. the result of occasional over filling of the
storage tank.
Since no hydrocarbons were detected in any of .the boreholes
, .
around the tank pit, the contamination appears to be limited to
K. tank locations:
1
the backfill area of the original to The high .
percentage of clay in the .soil probably contributed to this
localization. Considering the limited extent and minor amounts
E of contamination, the significant thicknesses of clay layers 3
underlying the site and the depth .to groundwater, it is Ground-
s,
water Technology's opinion that the possibility for
migration of
' hydrocarbon products to the groundwater would be remote..
1
I ill McKim
s
