r
MEg §
APPENDIX B: SOIL BORING AND WELL INSTALLATION PROTOCOL
B. 1 SOIL BORING
Soil borings will be drilled, using 10-1/4-inch hollow--stem
augers ( for installation of four-inch wells) or using 8-1/4--inch
i
k
augers ( for installation of two-.inch wells) . The borings will be
drilled to a depth of 10-20 feet below the static depth to water
to provide an adequate thickness of water for sampling as water
levels fluctuate. The well casing and screen will be installed
inside the hollow drill casing at the required depth (Figure
B-1 ) . A sand filter pack, topped with a Bentonite seal and a
cement-Bentonite grout to the surface, will be installed around
the well screen and casing.
The borings will be drilled by a qualified well drilling con-
tractor with a valid C-57 water well driller's license.
^- All drill. pipes, rods, and sampling and downhole equipment will
be steam.cleaned before drilling. A log of the soil boring will
be recorded by an EA geologist overseeing the drilling opera-
tions.. The boring logs will be signed and dated and will contain
detailed geologic information, describing soils in accordance
` with the Unified Soil Classification System. The drill cuttings
and: soil samples will. be monitored in the ff.eld for".the presence
of . hydrocarbons with an organic vapor analyzer that uses 'a flame
ionization detector. The moisture content of the soil samples .
f and .the initial and static. water levels will- be noted on the
logs. .
s All 'drill cuttings will be contained onsite in -sealed 55-gallon - .
drums. , The drums will be labeled with the borehole number, .
owner's name, depth interval of soil contents, date, and moni-
toring equipment readings. The drill cuttings will be disposed_
of at proper facilities on the basis of soil sample analysis.
GGGFFF hN1y .
Ll
e42/71050/7-90/apb B-1A.
j
S
