` JAN-18-'91 WED 12: 10 11 AX TECHNOLOGIES TEL NO:478 7; ] o
yr #498 Pit
Active Soil Bioremediation
The major hazard associated with this remediation alternative is that
water will be injected into the soil to provide oxygen to the soil
microbes. The potential exists for impaction of the aquifer by
hydrocarbons carried with the downwardly migrating water. Theprojected
duration for this remediation alternative is 3 to 5 years. The length of
this project duration is an environmental hazard in itself due to the
potential for aquifer impaction by hydrocarbons that remain in the soil
during this time. These hydrocarbons may migrate down to groundwater
level with the passage of time, or groundwater may come in contact with
hydrocarbon-impacted soil during periods of higher water table level ,
i .e. , during the winter months of a normal rainfall year. One of the
objectives of the soil remedial program is to prevent contamination of
groundwater resources , , Implementation of this remediation alternative
may obstruct achievement of this objective.
COSTS FOR IMPLEMENTATION, OPERATION, AND MAINTENANCE OF REMEDIATION!
ALTERNATIVES
In-Situ Vapor Extraction Soil Remediation System
The estimated cost for use of this remediation alternative is $50,000.
i
4
Soil Excavation and Disposal
The estimated cost for use of this remediation alternative is $600,000.
The estimated cost is so great due to actual excavation costs and the
cost to dispose of the soil at a Class I landfill .
Active Soil Bioremediation
The estimated cost for use of this remediation alternative is $200,000.
RECOMMENDED REMEDIATION ALTERNATIVE
Upon consideration of the conditions at the project site; costs to
implement, operate, and maintain the three remediation alternatives; and
the risks associated with each alternative, EVAX recommends
Implementation of a vapor extraction soil remediation system and program.
Vapor extraction provides the most effective remediation technology for
the least cost and with the least amount of risk to the public, field
technicians, and environment. Specifics of the recommended remediation
alternative are given below.
14 -
I
