Total Dissolved Nitrogen
The industry average content of nitrogen in typical domestic wastewater of 35 mg/L is used in this analysis. 10
Denitrification in the soil
As mentioned above, denitrification is an exponent of soil composition and detention time. The high silty clay
content of the soil will preserve moisture content in the biotic zone and the slowly permeable soil structure will
allow for an extended retention time. It is expected that this site will provide higher than normal
denitrification, however, an average value of 30% reduction in the concentration of nitrogen in the surface
soils has been used.
Rainfall
An annual rainfall for this area, as listed by the CIMIS website, was listed as 15 inches per year11. However, a
29 year precipitation data average for the Stockton Fire#412 is used and has been modified by the monthly
pan evaporation rate for the local area, as recorded by the WRCC average between 1948 and 200513. The
modified precipitation data only counts data from months in which the average precipitation exceeds the
monthly average pan evaporation. The adjusted precipitation value is 144 mm/y.
Nitrogen concentration of rainfall recharge
This value incorporates the background nitrogen concentration in the local rainfall and shallow surface soils.
Our research did not reveal any documentation specific to our area, but a color-shift map of the national
inorganic wet loading from 2017 indicates that the nitrate deposition is approximately 1 kg/ha.14 As such, a
value of 1' has been used in this assessment.
Conclusions
Based on the processing of reasonable data into the Hantzsche-Finnemore model, we find that a small
quantity of nitrogen content will reach the underlying groundwater. It appears that the nitrogen increase in the
local groundwater beneath the parcel will be increase by approximately 15.50 mg/L.
%MENTJ.
AL yF.
E
i I REFS#6086 ,
ovo
7'kf
10 Small and Decentralized Wastewater Management Systems,Crites,1998
11 CIMIS website
12
U SCLI MATE DATA.com
13 WRCC.dri.edu
14 National Atmospheric Deposition Program
Applied Wastewater Solutions, Inc, page 4 of 4
