EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Four new monitoring wells were installed at the Valley Motors dealership (800 East Main Street) in
Stockton, California in April 2003 One well was drilled on Valley Motors property, the other three
were drilled on City of Stockton property in the sidewalks on Main Street and the parking lane on
Grant Street Ten soil samples from these wells were analyzed for petroleum hydrocarbons, but
none were detected
Groundwater samples were collected from seven of the eight monitoring wells One well was dry
and could not be sampled Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons in the gasoline range were detected in six
of the samples, and benzene and/or other aromatic compounds were detected in five
Concentrations in the new off-site wells are higher than expected, although still much lower than in
the on-site wells, but the data are difficult to contour reliably in view of the groundwater flow
direction, which is more southeastward than expected
The elevation of the water table is approximately 20 feet below sea level, essentially the same as it
was when the site was morutored in the fourth quarter of 2002 The groundwater flow direction on
the south side of Main Street remains to the east, but this does not appear to be the case on the north
side of the street The elevation of the water table in a well on the north side of the street was higher
than anticipated, and this well was not downgradient of the contaminant source at Valley Motors as
anticipated Instead, the elevation in flus well was higher than in any of the wells on the Valley
Motors property, suggesting that groundwater flow is southeastward in the vicinity of this well
• Whether the hydrocarbons in flus well migrated from the Valley Motors property or had a different
source, perhaps on the north side of Main Street, cannot be determined from the available data
I
l
