After the emergency evacuation has been completed, a head count will be taken to ensure everyone is out of the building. <br /> If necessary,the Safety Program Administrator or Safety Committee members may assign some employees to rescue trapped <br /> employees. <br /> Fire Prevention in Shops and Warehouses <br /> The following procedures will be used to prevent fires in shops and warehouses. <br /> 1. All accumulated combustible trash and debris will be removed as soon as practical. <br /> 2. Flammable liquids will only be stored and dispensed from UL approved safety containers designed for that purpose. <br /> 3. All rags soaked with flammable or combustible liquids will be properly stored in closed metal containers. <br /> 4. Appropriate precautions will be taken to prevent fires when torch cutting,welding or soldering. <br /> 5. Compressed gas cylinders containing flammable or explosive gasses will be properly stored in the upright position with <br /> their caps on and protected from heat or puncture. Fuel gas and oxygen shall be separated at least 20 feet when stored. <br /> 6. Smoking or open lights are prohibited within 50 feet of flammable liquid or gas storage and dispensing areas. <br /> 7. Flammable solvents will not be used for cleaning purposes. <br /> 8. A fire extinguisher, rated not less than 2A, shall be provided for each 3,000 square feet of the floor area, or fraction <br /> thereof.Where the floor area is less than 3,000 square feet,at least one extinguisher shall be provided. <br /> 9. Travel distance from any point of the protected area to the nearest fire extinguisher shall not exceed 75 feet. <br /> 10. At least one fire extinguisher, rated not less than 2A,shall be provided on each floor. In multi-story buildings, at least one <br /> fire extinguisher shall be located adjacent to the stairway at each floor level. <br /> 11. A fire extinguisher, rated not less than 106, shall be provided within 50 feet of wherever more than 5 gallons of <br /> flammable or combustible liquids or 5 pounds of flammable gas are being used on the job site. This requirement does <br /> not apply to the integral fuel tanks of motor vehicles. <br /> 12. Portable fire extinguishers shall be inspected monthly, or at more frequent intervals by the employer, and serviced at <br /> least annually by a person licensed or registered by the State Fire Marshal. NOTE: Inspection is a "quick check" that an <br /> extinguisher is available and will operate. It is intended to give reasonable assurance that the extinguisher is fully charged <br /> and operable.This is done by seeing that it is in its designated place,that it has not been actuated or tampered with, and <br /> that there is no obvious or physical damage or condition to prevent operation. <br /> 13. Suitable fire control devices, such as portable fire extinguishers, shall be available at locations where flammable or <br /> combustible liquids are stored. <br /> 14. At least one portable fire extinguisher, having a rating of not less than 20-B units, shall be located outside of, but not <br /> more than 10 feet from,the door opening into any room used for flammable liquid storage. <br /> 15. At least one portable fire extinguisher, having a rating of not less than 20-B units, shall be located not less than 25 feet, <br /> nor more than 75 feet,from any flammable liquid storage area located outside. <br /> 50 <br />
