PHS/EHD has the following comments
for your consideration.
The groundwater samples that were collected from monitoring wells, MW1 and
MW2 on August 23, 1996 were analyzed on September 9, 1996, outside of the 14
days holding period. A water sample was collected on September 5, 1996 from
one of the two vapor extraction wells, VEW1 , and analysis detected petroleum
hydrocarbons including methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) by EPA Method 8260.
PHS/EHD agrees that the sample collected from VEW1 which is screened from 5 to
20 feet below ground surface (bgs) likely does not represent groundwater
conditions in the aquifer; however, the groundwater sample results indicate that
there is likely a surface drainage problem. Given the significant concentrations
observed in VEW1 : 3,500 ppb TPH-gas, 93 ppb MTBE, 55 ppb benzene, 6 ppb
toluene, 410 ppb ethylbenzene, and 380 ppb xylene; PHS/EHD recommends that
all wells undergo surface seal checks and repairs made where necessary.
Field notes from the August 23, 1996 sampling event indicated that the free
product skimmer was still located in MW3. As free product has not been observed
at this site for over a year, PHS/EHD suggests that the skimmer may better serve
Shell in some other location, i.e. 2575 Country Club Boulevard, in Stockton.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
