In accordance with option #3 of the November 1993 PHS/EHD communication,
' additional borings have been drilled in the vicinity of MW-2 to determine the extent of
any residual soil contamination Although hydrocarbon vapors were evident at shallow
depths in two borings, laboratory analysis of soil samples did not detect any hydrocarbons
above method detection limits This confirms that excavation during 1992 successfully
removed the contaminated soil. The benzene and toluene that were previously detected
at low concentrations in "smear zone" samples from MW-2 have been diluted or
remediated by oxygenated groundwater It is neither necessary nor possible to perform a
mass-balance calculation in this case. GeoAudit recommends that the site be certified for
' unconditional closure. Monitoring wells MW-2 and MW-3 should be destroyed in
accordance with PHS/EHD procedures
6.0 LIMITATIONS
' Our professional services were performed Using that degree of care and skill ordinarily
exercised by environmental consultants practicing in this or similar Iocalities The findings
were based upon analytical results provided by an independent laboratory Evaluations of
' the geologic/hydrogeologic conditions at the site for the purpose of this investigation are
made from a limited number of available data points (i a monitoring wells) and
subsurface conditions may vary away from these data points No other warranty,
' expressed or implied, is made as to the professional recommendations contained in this
report
1
I
14
