kn KLEINFELDER
BTEX and for TPH in the range of C-4 to C-9. After analysis, the probes will be removed,
and the holes will be filled with bentonite pellets hydrated with distilled water.
The results for the soil-gas survey will be contoured to assess whether contaminants have
spread from the area by the tank, what direction they appear to have spread, and
approximately how far they appear to have spread.
3.2 SOIL SAMPLING
. Three soil borings will be drilled around the tank excavation, at a distance of approximately
7 to 10 feet from the excavation, to assess the Iateral movement of contaminates in the
unsaturated soil above the water table. The borings will be drilled southwest, west, and
northwest of the excavation to an approximate depth of 10 feet. No investigation can be
performed immediately east of the tank due to the presence of the building. Soil samples
will be collected from the borings at approximately 3-foot intervals starting at ground
surface down to just above the ground water surface. The proposed locations of the radial
borings are shown on the Boring Location Map (Plate 3).
. The borings will be advanced with a truck-mounted drill rig equipped with 6-inch hollow-
stem augers. During the drilling, an experienced environmental geologist will classify the
soil, collect samples, and log the boreholes. Soil cuttings produced during drilling will be
containerized in 55-gallon drums and will become the responsibility of the client. Upon
completion, each boring will be grouted to the ground surface with a bentonite/cement
slurry.
`V Soil samples will be collected by advancing the boring to a point immediately above the
sampling depth and then driving a Modified California Sampler lined with three brass
tubes into the undisturbed soil. The sampler will then be removed from the bottom of the
boring and the bottom (third) tube sealed with Teflon and tight fitting plastic caps. The
+.• sealed tube will be immediately stored in an iced cooler. At the end of drilling operations,
select soil samples will be delivered, under chain-of-custody to ENSECO, a state/EPA
certified laboratory. The remaining soil samples will be retained in refrigerated storage for
future reference or analysis. 2 s G ly z<
L.
To reduce the potential for cross-contamination, augers and associated equipment will be
steam cleaned prior to the drilling of each borehole. The sampling equipment will be
- 181-89-719 4
