Ms. Mary Meays page 6
February 25, 1993
FUTURE ACTIVITIES
ERM and Catellus believe that soil and groundwater contamination at Site #1
have been adequately defined, and no further investigation activities are
warranted. Our rationale for the extended monitoring of both sites was to
gain more information about the groundwater conditions at Site #2. We
have requested extending the evaluation of remediation alternatives at both
sites, if required, until Site #2 is better understood. Thus, we will be able to
act on both sites, if required, in a more coordinated and cost effective manner.
To assess the lateral extent of TPH-G, TPH-D and BTEX in the soils to the east
and north of the tank excavation at Site #2, Catellus will conduct a limited
soil and groundwater investigation. We anticipate that the soil investigation
will consist of soil borings from which soil samples can be obtained and
analyzed. A fifth groundwater monitoring well will also be installed further
to the north of MW-1A to define the lateral extent where groundwater has
been impacted by TPH-D, TPH-G and BTEX. Collectively, the five monitoring
wells at Site #2 should adequately provide for the definition of a circular area
of detectable constituents around the tank excavation.
Shortly, Catellus will submit to you a letter which outlines the proposed
scope of work to be conducted for limited soil and groundwater investigation
activities at Site #2. We expect that this work will be conducted in March
1993, and will provide the necessary information to submit a Problem
Assessment Report (PAR) by May 14, 1993.
We appreciated the opportunity to meet with you in December. If you have
any questions about this letter, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Bruce
Pfaff at the telephone number listed above.
Sincerely,
ERM-WEST, INC.
Bruce J. Pfaff Mark P. Ransom, P.E.
Project Manager Principal-in-Charge
BJP/cln/1572.06
Enclosures - Noted
cc: Elizabeth Thayer -- Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board
