PHS/EHD has the following comments for your consideration.
Thank you for the inclusion of the site map locating all monitoring wells and former leaking underground
storage tanks and of the chain of custody for the March 28, 1992 soil samples collected during the
installation of MW0A
PHS/EHD requested in correspondence dated July 27, 1992, that efforts be continued to measure
groundwater elevations within one hour to provide reliable data for the determination of groundwater
gradient, given possible tidal influences. Unfortunately, due to short notice PHS/EHD was unable to
provide an inspection of the September 1, 1992 sampling event to verify that groundwater elevation
measurements were taken within one hour. Field records indicated that the groundwater elevation
measurements of September 1, 1992 began at 7:35 AM and ended at 2:10 PM. Groundwater elevation
measurements should be taken within one hour. Furthermore, two sets of groundwater elevation
measurements, one taken upon arrival and one taken prior to departure, would provide information which
could then be correlated to tide tables to evaluate tidal influences.
PHS/EHD stated in correspondence dated July 27, 1992 that the placement of the screened interval within
MW3A and MW4A was not in a position to evaluate petroleum contamination. PHS/EHD also stated
that once the gradient was confirmed it would be necessary to install an additional downgradient
monitoring well to establish the extent of contamination. Field records indicated that on September 1,
1992 static water levels were above the screened intervals for monitoring wells, MW3A and MW4A.
Evaluation of the tide table may provide useful scheduling information. If at low tide the static water level
is below the screened interval, sample results from these wells would be more representative.
Your request for an extension of the November 15, 1992 due date for submittal of a problem assessment
report is granted until May 14, 1993.
A Division or San Joaquin founry Health rare services
