per week until it has dried Once the soil has dried, the soil will be
aerated three days per week, for eight hours per day intense aeration
will maximize the air/soil contact and will expedite the remediation
process
The soil will be aerated with a harrow, attached to a conventional
' tractor Using a harrow instead of more conventional tilling
equipment will minimize damage to the underlying paving The
breathing space of the tractor operator will be monitored with a direct-
reading instrument to ensure that proper protective equipment is
utilized, if necessary
' Because the constituents of concern are relatively volatile, the aeration
process is expected to proceed quickly once the soil has been dried
Therefore several confirmation soil samples will be collected
' approximately four weeks after the start of the aeration periods One
sample will be collected from each quadrant of the aeration area The
sample will be analyzed for TPH as gasoline and BTEX by a California-
' certified laboratory The samples will be analyzed on regular turn-
around basis
If the sample analysis shows that the constituents of concern are
generally below the cleanup criteria, the aeration confirmation
sampling program will be implemented (see below) If constituents are
still generally greater than the cleanup criteria, aeration will be
continued for another two weeks The soil will then be sampled as
before If the aeration process cannot be completed prior to the start of
the wet season (estimated to be between November 1 and November
15), the soil will be covered and active aeration will take place only on
clear days until the end of the wet season (estimated to be March 15)
' The wet weather contingency plans are described further below
Once the aeration has been completed, and the TPH and BTEX
1 concentrations in the soil are below action levels, the fence and the
straw bales will be removed The treated soil will be spread out along
' the western (unpaved) area of the site (Figure 5-3), and may be used to
fill in low spots in this area
Acrat• 1
As indicated above, the first set of aeration confirmation samples will
be collected approximately four weeks after initiation of the aeration
process Four samples will be collected The samples will be analyzed
5 This estimatred time period may be modified due to weather conditions that would be
anticipated to delay or expedite the progress of the aeration
5-6
