by a California-certified laboratory for TPH as gasohne6 using EPA
Method 8015-Modified and for BTEX using EPA Method 8020
Samples will be collected either by directly pushing a pre-cleaned brass
tube into the mass of soil in the aeration area until the tube is filled
The tubes will be sealed by placing Teflon® film over the ends and
' securing it in place with plastic caps Each tube will be labeled with a
unique sample number, date and time of sampling, project name and
number, and sampler's initials The tubes will then be placed in a
Ziploc®-type plastic bag, sealed, and placed on ice in a cooler for
shipment to the laboratory
If sampling confirms that the concentrations are below action levels,
four additional samples will be collected and analyzed to verify that the
entire mass of affected soil has met the action levels The proposed
initial and follow-up sampling locations are shown in Figure 5-3 The
spacing of the samples will be adjusted as necessary, depending on the
total area ultimately required for the aeration If these four samples
also meet the action level requirements, the aeration process will be
considered complete If any of the samples exceed action levels, the soil
will be aerated further, and resampled as before If only a small area of
soil appears to exceed action levels, the aeration will focus on this
remaining volume of soil
Once the aeration process has been completed, the site will proceed to
closure
Wet W ather Contingency Plan
' Because the aeration process may carry over into the rainy season, wet
weather contingency measures are required As noted earlier, the
affected soil will be confined by straw bales If wet weather threatens,
the affected soil will be covered with HDPE to prevent the rain water
from coming into contact with the soil Covering the soil will
eliminate concerns over contaminated run-off, and minimize the
ramount of drying that would have to occur after each rain event To
ease the movement of the HDPE, it will be placed on rollers, allowing
simple covering and uncovering The edges of the plastic will be
secured by weighing it down with cinder blocks Under this scenario,
aeration could continue into the early part of the rainy season because
' the time between rain events would be relatively long
6 The excavation confirmation data will show whether diesel constituents are also present
above levels of concern Based on the available data, it is unlikely that analysis for TPH-
diesel will be required for the aerated soil
5-7
