SECTION 4
HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN
This section describes the potential health and safety hazards and
appropriate procedures to be followed to prevent injury or chemical
exposure during drilling and well development activities.
Significant site-specific hazards anticipated during drilling, well
development and construction, ground water sampling, and soil
sampling include the following
' • Underground utilities;
• Heavy construction equipment (drill rigs);
• Motor traffic;
' * Heat stress (in the summer); and
• Exposure to petroleum products and/or vapor
The first five of these are classified as physical hazards, while exposure
' to petroleum products is considered to be a chemical hazard Physical
and chemical hazards are described separately below.
Physical Hazards
' Utilities and the underground storage tanks were located by
Underground Service Alert during the UST removal activities in 1991
' and site investigation activities in 1992 Prior to the initiation of this
field work, the locations markings of the utilities will be verified by
ERM-West personnel The actual locations of the wells will be
carefully chosen using the information provided by the markout and
noting any other potential hazards (overhead electrical lines, etc.)
Caution will also be maintained during drilling by slowly advancing
' the drill for approximately the first five feet of depth
Worker safety in the vicinity of heavy equipment, such as the drill rig,
will be stressed on the job site Safety procedures will consist of
keeping the personnel working in the vicinity of the drill rig to a
minimum, and making the operator aware of personnel that are
4-1
