j
Ric Notini
Page 2
The fate of the soil stockpiled August 27 , 1991 was not addressed
in the Workplan although discussed during the February 10, 1992
telecommunication. ERM-West stated that further characterization
by 6 : 3 compositing, without PHS/EHD inspection, indicated that
the stockpile was nondetectable for petroleum contamination
although total lead levels were elevated. PHS/EHD questions the
' validity of these results as it is known that diesel
contamination does not readily volatilize and the stockpile was
covered by plastic, thus preventing volatilization. The plastic
• covered stockpile had been previously sampled under PHS/EHD
inspection and there is no indication that those results were not
representative of the contamination present in the stockpile.
Please provide PHS/EHD documentation of the stockpile sample
results prior to proposing the disposal method for the stockpile.
Fieldwork may begin upon receipt of a drilling permit
application, applicable fees and issuance of a drilling permit.
Please notify PHS/EHD 48 hours in advance of any site activity.
If you have any questions or comments please contact
Mary Meays, REHS, of my staff at (209) 468-0337 .
