The tanks will be uncovered and removed with a backhoe. After a
tank has been removed from the ground, the tank will be visually
inspected for general condition and potential leaks. The tanks and
attendant piping will be transported from the saes under manifest by
Dobbas (U S. EPA ID No. CAD 981982994) to Erickson, Inc. (U S. EPA
ID No. CAD 009466392) located in Richmond, California. Erickson
will be responsible for destruction and final disposal of the tanks
Erickson will issue a certificate of tank destruction.
RkfilltrQr
After the tank excavations are sampled (see below), the excavations
will be immediately backfilled with clean material. If appropriate,
the tank excavations will be lined with Visqueen prior to backfilling
The backfilling will commence immediately because the open
excavation could affect the stability of the warehouse building at 1325
West Weber and because the stability of the tank excavations could be
affected by truck traffic.
The material removed from each tank excavation will be stockpiled
Each stockpile will be staged on Visqueen and will be covered with
the same material. Prior to final covering, the stockpiles will be
sampled. If the results of the laboratory testing are below regulatory
limits, the stockpile(s) will be disposed of in a Class III landfill If
test results exceed regulatory limits, the material will remain on site
pending the completion of an investigation of the tank site(s) and
determination of remedial measures.
Soil and Groundwater Sampling
After the tanks have been removed from the excavations th
Arte e e soils
under the tanks will be sampled by ERM-West, Inc. If there is a
significant amount of groundwater in the excavation, the
groundwater will also be sampled
Soil samples will be collected with the aid of a backhoe The backhoe
will be used to excavate a small trench to approximately two feet
below the bottom of the tank, near each of the tank ends The backhoe
f will then remove soil from the base of the excavation for sampling.
The soils in the backhoe bucket will be sampled by pushing a pre-
cleaned brass tube into the soil mass until the tube is filled. Tubes
will be sealed by placing Teflon film over the ends and securing it in
2-2
