The Pit 3 grab water sample
collected when the underground storage tanks (UST's) were removed had
11,000 parts per billion (ppb) MTBE in it. In order to define the vertical extent of
the contamination in this area, soil samples must be collected below 15 feet from
surface grade:
Soil and groundwater samples submitted to the laboratory from this phase of
investigation were not analyzed for the five oxygenates (DIPE, MTBE, TAME,
TBA, ETBE) using EPA Method 8260 as directed in the PHS/EHD letter dated
February 1, 1999. Future samples submitted for laboratory analysis must be
tested for these oxygenates using EPA !Method 8260.
Quality assurance/quality control. data from'the laboratory for the samples
analyzed from the geoprobe work and the monitoring well water samples was not
included in the report. In addition, the chain of custody for the monitoring well j
water samples was not included in the report. Please submit this information as
an addendum to the report.
The report recommends abandoning monitoring wells MW2, MW5, and MW6.
No monitoring wells should be destroyed at this time. MW6 has not been located
since April 1998 and must be located and sampled during the next quarterly
sampling event.
:'Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services'
